BACKSTORY

The song is "Out of Blue", the title track on my upcoming record (releasing Feb 15, 2019). It's ultimately a break-up album, but one that embraces the whole journey — the bliss and the bruises, the falling in and the wanting out, the holding on and the letting go.

This particular song falls into the bliss category. It's a song about sex and Buddhism. (I leave it to you to decipher which is which.) Longtime fans will note it's a little more rock n' roll than you're used to. The full album runs the entire emotional-sonic spectrum so if sad and mellow is more your jam, don't worry, I got you.

I’m releasing the album Valentine’s week. Whether you’re happily in love or you just got dumped, this record will take care of you.

Strange but true: all the vocals on this song were recorded while my hometown in Northern California was on fire, one year ago. The Rainbow Girls and I cut the studio session short after finishing this song to rush back home. Now California is on fire again and it's even worse this time.

You'd never know any of this by listening to the song. You just hear the Rainbow Girls singing their beautiful hearts out — as artists do in the very best and very worst of times.

LYRICS

I spent my youth chasing two ways of making love
First one was lonely but it sure felt good
Number two was something new, she blew all the hinges off
Got me so high I was making out with God above
In a thing called love
Till the drugs wore off

All my bliss turned to madness, night and day
I've been searching for a middle way
Out of blue, there was you, waking up the neighborhood
And for the first time, love wasn't just Hollywood
Wasn't just feel good
God you feel so good
When we're waking up the neighborhood

Breaking loose was one pursuit you knew all the physics of
Showed me to the one thing I couldn't put my finger on
Now every time I close my eyes
I feel your body moving mine

From the start I know we're gonna make out
I'm not afraid of the faith now
In my heart I'm never gonna fade out
I'm gonna love you all the way down

I was swirling in the blues
Till I found you
I was so confused, show me the true way out
Till I found you, and your twist and shout

You've got me all washed out — of blue, there was you
Waking up the neighborhood
And for the first time, love wasn't just Hollywood
Wasn't just feel good
God you feel so good

From the start I know we're gonna make out
I'm not afraid of the faith now
In my heart I'm never gonna fade out
I'm gonna love you all the way down

I'm never gonna fade out
In my heart, I'm never gonna fade out
